Image of absence of coronary sinus

These rare variations were found in a specimen obtained from a 78-year-old male subject.

Huber reported (in Piersol's Human Anatomy, 9th Ed. J.B. Lippincott Co., Philadelphia, 1930) that the great cardiac vein may, in the absence of the coronary sinus, terminate in the left brachiocephalic vein. In this specimen the great cardiac vein terminated in the superior vena cava.

A: Veins converging on ostium to right atrium (arrow).

B: Great cardiac vein draining into superior vena cava (curved arrow) after passing beneath a branch of the left coronary artery (straight arrow).

Dissecting room specimen. The University of Iowa College of Medicine.
