Left: In this case the tibialis anterior (Ta) branch of the popliteal artery passes anterior to (beneath) the popliteus muscle (purple color). The popliteal artery (P) passes over the muscle before the branching of the artery tibialis posterior (Tp).

Middle:In this second case, the popliteal and the tibialis anterior arteries pass beneath (anterior to) the popliteus muscle and tibialis posterior passes over the popliteus muscle.

Right: In the third case, the tibialis anterior (Ta), the popliteal (P), and the tibialis posterior (Tp) arteries all pass posterior to (over) the popliteus muscle.
