Popliteal Artery Entrapment

Ronald A. Bergman, PhD

Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed

Normal course of neurovascular bundle in popliteal fossa from posterior approach is compared with generally accepted four types of anomalies invlving entrapment of popliteal artery usually associated with abnormal configuration of medial head of gastrocnemius muscle. Classification, however, does not satisfy all anatomic variants. Empirically, type 4 was expanded to include branch of tibial nerve as structure compressing popliteal artery and type 5 was added to emphasize that popliteal vein can be entrapped with artery in all four types.
