Diagrams illustrate development of stapedial artery and formation of middle meningeal artery from ascending branch of stapedial artery. I, II, III,and IV, Respective aortic arches; A, supraorbital branch of stapedial artery; B, infraorbital branch of stapedial artery; C, mandibular division from descending trunk of stapedial artery. If segment between Aand B, i.e., the connection between stapedial and external carotid arteries, fails to develop (or becomes obliterated), middle meningeal artery arises from ophthalmic artery.
