Heterotopia of the spinal cord was first described by Arnold Pick in 1878. (Pick, A. Beitrage zur normal. und path. Anat. des centralen Nervensystems - Heterotopie grauer Substanz im menschlichen Ruckenmark. Archiv, f. Psychiatrie, 7, 1878.) The drawing shows Pick's case of heterotopia of the spinal cord. The shaded circular area in the posterior column indicates the heterotopic fragment of gray matter.
