Relationship of the facial nerve to parotid gland.

Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed

Varying relations, each of which has been described as commonly prevailing, between the parotid gland and the facial nerve. In a, b, and c the nerve is shown passing between deep and superficial lobes of the gland, but the relationship of these lobes is variously depicted: a shows superficial and deep lobes united above, so that the gland is essentially folded over the nerve; b shows the two lobes united by an isthmus; c shows a combination of a and b. In d and its subnumbers is shown the relationship according to McKenzie: gland and nerve intertwined, with no superficial and deep lobes, and the relationship varying according to the plane of section.
