Accessory Iliosacral Articulations

Ronald A. Bergman, PhD
Adel K. Afifi, MD, MS
Ryosuke Miyauchi, MD

Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed

Accessory articulations vary in number, according to author, from 16% to 50% of all specimens. They vary in diameter from 0.59 to 1.2 cm and are usually located near and between the first and second posterior sacral foramina.

The drawing shows the left lateral view of the sacrum.

In addition to accessory articulations, the sacrum may possess ribs. In one reported case the rib was found to be partially embedded on the undersurface of the gluteus maximus. The distal end of the rib was attached to the greater trochanter of the femur by a fibrous band.
