Anterior Jugular

Ronald A. Bergman, PhD
Adel K. Afifi, MD, MS
Ryosuke Miyauchi, MD

Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed

The anterior jugular may exist as two parallel vessels, one opening into the transverse cervical vein and one into the external jugular. The two anterior jugular veins are also sometimes present , with one median vessel opening into the external jugular and the other into the subclavian vein.

An anterior jugular vein (and/or a thyroid ima artery) may have a midline course on the trachea and this must not be forgotten when tracheotomy is to be performed.
